Dr Schallhorn est l'un des spécialistes en chirurgie réfractive le plus respecté au monde. Il a effectué plus de 50 000 procédés de correction de la vue au laser et préside le comité médical international d'Optical Express, l'International Medical Advisory Board (IMAB).
En 2007, le Dr Shallhorn a pris sa retraite de la Marine américaine en tant qu'ancien Capitaine. Durant sa carrière dans la Marine, il fut directeur du service de la Cornée et de Chirurgie réfractive au Centre médical de la Marine de San Diego. Il fut également à l'origine du programme de chirurgie réfractive du Ministère de la Défense Américaine, dont il créa le service et fut le premier dirigeant. Il géra parallèlement le premier programme de chirurgie réfractive pour la Marine américaine. Ce programme étudiait le rétablissement visuel et la performance caractéristique de la PRK et du LASIK, avant que les lasers excimer ne soient approuvés par la FDA. Il fut le premier chirurgien du Département de la Défense des Etats-Unis à effectuer des interventions LASIK et PRK ainsi que la pose d'implants par lentilles intraoculaires phakic.
Dr Shallhorn est reconnu par ses pairs comme étant un expert en chirurgie réfractive et en chirurgie du segment antérieur. Il fait partie d'un petit groupe d'instructeurs du laser excimer aux Etats-Unis. De nombreux centres d'enseignement optique dans tout le pays le sollicitent pour enseigner et tout le milieu industriel le supplie de donner des formations. Il est professeur en médecine associé dans les universités suivantes : Harvard, USC, UCSF et l'université Baylor.
Dr Shallhorn est médecin consultant à la NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), à l'OTAN (Organisation pour le Traité de l'Atlantique Nord), à l'ATF (US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms), au FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation), au NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), et au FAA (Federal Aviation Administration). Il est également conseiller en chirurgie réfractive pour en Australie, au Canada, en France, en Grande-Bretagne, en Grèce, au Japon, en Nouvelle-Zélande, à Singapour, à Taiwan et en Turquie. De plus, il a travaillé avec les cinq branches des forces armées américaines, comprenant l'armée de l'air, la marine et les gardes côtes.
Au cours des 25 dernières années, chercheur impénitent, Dr Schallhorn a travaillé sur de nombreux programmes d'essai du FDA (Food and Drug Administration). Il a présenté plus de 200 articles scientifiques et a donné une multitude de colloques à travers les Etats-Unis, l'Europe et l'Asie. Il est également l'auteur de nombreuses revues et articles universitaires.
Avant d'entrer à l'école de médecine, Dr Schallhorn jouissait d'une carrière couronnée de succès en tant qu'aviateur dans la marine et instructeur TOPGUN dans la marine américaine. Pendant son séjour à TOP GUN, le scénariste Jack Epps Jr. l'a interrogé pour créer le point de départ du film Top Gun. Et bien que le film soit un portrait fictif de l'aéronavale, beaucoup d'événements dans le film sont basés sur des histoires transmises pas Dr Schallhorn.
Il est indéniable que le passé du Dr Schallhorn dans l'aéronavale a influencé sa carrière médicale. Durant ses études de médecine, il a lancé et dirigé, sous l'égide du Laboratoire de Recherche médicale de la Marine et de l'Aérospaciale (NAMRL : Naval Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory), un projet pluriannuel qui a eu pour résultat d'améliorer la capacité de survie du personnel navigant au combat.
En 1993, c'est ce même organisme qui permit au Dr Schallhorn de se pencher sur les recherches concernant la chirurgie réfractive au laser, alors dans sa phase d'études préliminaires instiguées par la FDA.
En tant qu'aviateur dans l'aéronavale, il avait compris la nécessité d'avoir une vision parfaite. Il sut saisir le potentiel que pouvait offrir cette science naissante à ceux dont les activités professionnelles requéraient une vision précise, comme les aviateurs. Il comprit également l'intérêt que pouvez représenter cette technique pour ceux dont les occupations requéraient une vision précise mais dont l'environnement professionnel n'était pas adapté aux lunettes et aux lentilles.
Investi de cette connaissance, le Dr Schallhorn a dédié sa carrière à la recherche de méthodes toujours plus sûres, plus efficaces et plus précises en matière de correction de la vision.
